- Marked for Memory is an analysis of the effects of being haunted by past experiences, processing intergenerational trauma and how it manifests in cycles. It is a cycle of grief for the past, for loved ones, and learning new ways to operate within societal expectations. Each cycle is a series of records created to translate psychological wounds into physical impressions, exploring how each memory behaves and impacts the individual struggling to thrive within existing social structures. Living in a society which vilifies adversity and amplifies shame creates the need to hide vulnerability and mask injury and illness in order to succeed. Marked for Memory is meant to mirror the feeling of dissociation through fragmentation and disorientation and is represented as a nightmarish dystopia. These records are represented in painted graphs and printed matter, and elements of the work are intentionally left raw to communicate the physical shock of unwanted memories flooding in. This work is not intended for an experienced artistic audience and therefore is meant to be easily accessible to all viewers outside the private sphere with the intention of sharing my experience so that others may feel less isolated in theirs.
