01 - Exhibition Statement

Pulled From Pasture is a series of playful, contemporary prairie landscapes, including both finished paintings and loose sketches and studies that take a slight step away from reality. A meeting between two prairie-based artists, this series of work pulls from nostalgia, memory, imagination, folk art inspiration, and curiosity about how stories and sensory experiences can be explored in paint. In a joyful effort to share observations of the vibrancy of life on the prairies, Pulled From Pasture encourages viewers towards a greater engagement with their own stories of the prairie landscape.

02 - Artist Statement

Born a generation and province apart, Terri and Emma both grew up learning about the prairie as told in family stories, at a distance through road trip car windows, and up close and personal on hikes, camping trips, and lazy days beside prairie lakes. These stories left an indelible mark on both of them that more naturalistic prairie landscapes don’t usually live up to. Through their painting practices, these two artists explore how their relationship to the prairies translates into contemporary landscape painting.
