Eight Corners Under One Roof / Charlie Tong / 10.17.2025 - 11.08.2025
Eight Corners Under One Roof is an art project inspired by the symbolic form of the Miyazaki Tower in Japan, a monument built to embody the wartime ideology of Hakkō Ichiu (“eight corners of the world under one roof”). The work gathers stones from eight distinct locations, each carrying the memory, geography, and cultural identity of its origin. Arranged beneath a unifying structure, they recreate the ideological tension between imposed unity and genuine coexistence. By recontextualizing the Hakkō Ichiu ideal, the piece interrogates the fine line between cultural integration and imperial ambition, inviting viewers to consider whether unity is an act of harmony or a mechanism of power.
